It began as a dream over 50 years ago.

Thatʼs when Dr. Joseph Nishimoto, "Dr. Joe," returned to Hawaiʻi with his wife Maude, to practice medicine in Aiea and Pearl City. As the community grew, he envisioned a state-of-the-art hospital here so that Leeward families wouldn't have to drive into town for medical care.

The road to achieving that vision spanned eight years and took the efforts of many. Most importantly, the community shared in Dr. Joeʼs vision. The planning group successfully collected 13,000 signatures on a petition to help secure state approval for development of the new Leeward facility. The hospital known today as Pali Momi Medical Center opened in 1989. "Itʼs so important for families to know they can receive quality care close to home. With Kapiʻolani here they can. Thatʼs gratifying to me," says Dr. Joe.

Since then, Pali Momi has made significant strides to bring the latest technology and innovative programs to Leeward Oʻahu, providing services in the community, where itʼs needed, and attracting more than 400 physicians to its medical staff.
